  • Quick poll:

Everyone has faced this situation at least once:

You are driving on a two lane highway.  A sign comes into view, indicating that the two lanes are merging into one.  You merge soon after seeing this.  Seconds later, another driver zooms by you, waits until the last possible second, and manages to merge by forcing his (or her) way in.

Should this person be criticized for this behavior?  Or should you instead admire the fact that he is now 10-15 cars ahead of the rest of the pack, and likely to reach his destination sooner than you?

i wouldn't admire that he/she was able to get ahead of me...i would be initially pissed and hope those ppl dont let him in...think "shiet i should've done that"...but eventually i'll be, "ehh, oh wells, i hope he/she gets caught, etc"

15 cars is about 2mins time save i guess
when endangering lives it's just nto worth it

im with shells, if it was me up there i wouldnt let him in, that's just me. he maybe endangering my life, but at least i denied him his 10 seconds by not getting in front of me.

By the way you described it, traffic sounds like it's moving slow. "Seconds later" and 10-15 cars means that it sounds a bit like a traffic jam. So it doesn't sound dangerous at all.

Therefore, he wouldn't get in front of me because I already did the same thing. Unless he actually used the shoulder, at which point yes, I would be very upset. Also, it's not up to you to let him in or not, if he knows what he's doing. He should be able to find a decent space if it is in fact stop and go traffic. Every car has a certain delay, so when you see a gap you should get into the gap right behind it as the car behind the gap you see will form a new gap right behind him when he starts moving but before the car behind him starts. It's a beautiful ballet of traffic flow, like that BMW film directed by Ang Lee.

If everyone used the fastest lane available, the flow of traffic as a whole would be at its maximum aggregate speed. Being selfish serves the greater good. Yeah.
